These seeds are actually an ancient food that was prized by Mexican and South American cultures as a stable food. In fact, CHIA means strength in the Mayan language. It is not surprising that people have relied upon this tiny little black or white seeds for a long time.   • Chia seeds are a whole grain food that can be digested by the body in an unprocessed form.

  • They have a mild flavor and can get consumed raw, but they are also handy to use in gels, pudding, sauces, sprinkles for cereal, yogurt, or fruit, or blended into smoothies.

Chia Seeds: Weight Loss Plateau Busters

Even though doctors say that there is no reason to believe chia seeds help you lose weight, we have plenty of reports that say that they have added a boost to many frustrated dieter’s efforts. Most of the time, these dieters did a lot of other things right, but they got stuck on a plateau.  That’s why, we would go out on a limb and suggest that chia seeds are good weight loss plateau busters!

First, chia seeds pack a lot of fiber. Fiber helps people feel more full and also helps digestive systems properly absorb nutrients and flush out waste and toxins. Many well-regarded diet programs, like Weight Watchers, suggest adding more fiber to a diet to help with dieting, and a Harvard study reported that Americans are sorely lacking in fiber consumption. Along with fiber, a tablespoon of chia seeds adds plenty of other nutrients in a form that the body can easily digest (unlike flax seeds).

Lots of people also speculate that the EFAs (essential fatty acids) help the body convert food into muscle and energy. It could also be the addition of added calcium which has been recently suggested as a key to weight loss for people who get stuck on the scale. Science hasn’t given us an answer, but chia seeds are not an unhealthy addition to a diet in any case.

One of our editors has one of these as a sweet treat before she goes to bed every night. The next morning, she reports excellent bowel movements and an easier time breaking weight loss plateaus. She also says that she finds it much easier to roll out of bed early in the morning when she consumes one of these in the evening.

Of course, she has been enjoying these chia seed weight loss smoothies as part of a sensible diet (but she admits that she could get more exercise).

Peel a banana and freeze it. Feel free to add another piece of fruit and freeze it too. Some good suggestions are diced apples, berries, oranges, and diced pineapple. Carrots and melons work too.

  • Break up the frozen banana and add it to your blender along with about half a cup of milk or milk substitute (soy, almond, rice, etc.).
  • Add other optional fruit if you choose too.
  • Add a sprinkle of cinnamon and a packet of stevia (or a squirt of local honey).
  • Add about a cup of ice.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.
  • Blend until you have a smooth consistency and enjoy.
